Role:

National Library of Medicine

Kin-Wah Fung, MD, MS, MA, FRCSEd has been working as Staff Scientist at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health for over 10 years. Dr. Fung enjoyed a long and successful career as a Consultant Surgeon before moving into the field of Medical Informatics. He led the planning and implementation of clinical information systems in 14 Hong Kong public hospitals, serving over five million patients. Dr. Fung’s main focus of research and development at NLM is medical terminologies, with the goal of promoting and facilitating the adoption of terminology and health data standards in the electronic health record. To that end, he creates, publishes and maintains terminology implementation resources, including the CORE Problem List Subset of SNOMED CT and RxTerms, which are widely used both in clinical systems and research settings. He also spearheads the development of various mappings between clinical terminologies and administrative classifications, primarily to facilitate the re-use of encoded clinical information. One on-going, NLM project that he leads creates a rule-based cross-map from SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM to support the eventual transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. He also participates actively in SNOMED CT-related activities at the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) through the special interest groups. He is an IHTSDO-certified SNOMED CT consultant terminologist. His other research interests include data mining and natural language processing.
