December 2022
This chart illustrates the share of office-based physicians who indicated they electronically recorded social determinants of health (SDOH) data (e.g., employment, education) and behavioral determinants of health (BDOH) data (e.g., tobacco use, physical activity, alcohol use) using a computerized system between the years 2018 and 2021.
As of 2021, 85% of physicians electronically recorded SDOH data and 97% electronically recorded BDOH data. Rates of electronic recording of SDOH and BDOH data were slightly higher among primary care physicians, with 89% of primary care physicians electronically recording SDOH data and 98% electronically recording BDOH data in 2021.
| Physician Type | Data Type | 2018 | 2019 | 2021 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All Physicians | Social determinants of health (SDOH) | 85% | 84% | 85% |
| All Physicians | Behavioral determinants of health (BDOH) | 96% | 94% | 97% |
| Primary care physicians | Social determinants of health (SDOH) | 84% | 87% | 89% |
| Primary care physicians | Behavioral determinants of health (BDOH) | 99% | 96% | 98% |
Estimates only include respondents who indicated their reporting location uses an EHR (~90% of the sample each year). Blank and “don’t know” responses (about 11-12% of the sample for recording of SDOH data and about 2-4% of the sample for BDOH data) were treated as “No”.
