Playing with FHIR® is an opportunity for health IT developers to take a deep dive into HL7’s FHIR® (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard. FHIR® server resources and sample data will be available for participants to work on new ideas and applications, while testing tools will be available for applications that are more developed. Population-level data access will be a primary theme, in addition to Blue Button 2.0, CDS Hooks, and Da Vinci Coverage Requirements Discovery. The Workshop seeks to catalyze new ideas and approaches to using FHIR® to solve interoperability issues. Developers who wish to participate can be new to health IT, have an established software application, or anywhere in between. All that’s required is an interest in getting your hands dirty with FHIR®! The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) hosted the 2nd Interoperability Forum on August 6th- 8th, 2018 in Washington, DC.  This event brought people together from ONC, our federal partners, the healthcare industry, and the technology sector to:

Learn about recent efforts to advance interoperability nationwide

Identify concrete actions in response to current interoperability barriers

Attendees heard keynotes from industry influencers and had the opportunity to view demos showcasing innovative solutions. On the second day, attendees participated in tracks focused on various aspects of interoperability such as the deployment of application programming interfaces (APIs), improving clinicians’ experience with interoperability, patient matching, security and more.  Co-led by industry leaders and supported by ONC experts, the tracks provided an opportunity to discuss the latest issues and identify actions that can be taken to address key barriers to interoperability in a group setting.  On the third and final day of the meeting, key next steps and highlights from the day-long tracks were reported out by track leads to all attendees. Under the implementation of the 21st Century Cures Act, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) in partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are charged with documenting the effects of clinician burden and providing suggestions on how to reduce clinician burden associated with clinical practice and the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). We invite you to participate in a multi-stakeholder meeting on February 22nd from 10 AM to 4:30 PM at the Hubert Humphrey Building Auditorium in Washington, DC or via phone. It would be particularly valuable for those currently working on initiatives to reduce clinician burden within your organization or with direct clinical practice experience to participate. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) are proud to present the 4th installment of the Interoperability in Action Webinar series, which will focus on the use of blockchain technology and its current and future implications in the healthcare field. The event will kick-off with keynote speaker Justin Herman of General Services Administration (GSA), as well as a Blockchain update presented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  The webinar will also feature presentations from the four 1st round winners of ONC’s Health Data Provenance Challenge in which participants proposed solutions to real-world obstacles for provenance in clinical care. Of the four 1st round winners, three proposed solutions involved the use of blockchain technology. Finally, we will conclude the event with an HHS Roundtable and Q & A session.
