Technology’s Role in Making America Healthy Again: A Discussion on Mental Health & Substance Use Care

A full day of roundtable discussions will examine how expanded adoption of health IT can improve mental health and substance use care outcomes and advance the Administration’s commitment to whole-person recovery.

In accordance with President Donald J. Trump’s Great American Recovery Initiative and pursuant to the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025, ONC will convene a landmark, all-day event to explore the role of health IT in improving mental health treatment and fighting the disease of addiction.

Leaders in government, technology, and health care — including providers and Americans with lived experience — will come together to discuss how the Trump Administration is harnessing technology and partnerships to transform behavioral health and whole-person care.

Explore how health information technology is being applied in behavioral health and substance use disorder care settings in a discussion about current examples of EHR-enabled care coordination, the emerging role of health information technology in supporting clinical and patient outcomes, and the program and policy conditions needed to expand access to effective tools. Participants will discuss how health information technology is improving behavioral health care delivery, as well as what is needed to scale effective models across all communities.

Roundtable 3: Building the Bridge: From Today's Barriers to Tomorrow's System

Moderated by Mark Atalla

Roundtable participants will discuss the barriers for EHR adoption in behavioral health settings and what it will take to fully integrate EHRs into behavioral health care.  In this discussion, participants will examine the unique challenges in behavioral health settings and what role technology can play in improving outcomes.  The conversation will explore cost, certification gaps, and the regulatory conditions needed to move from fragmentation to a connected system with improved outcomes.
