As of 2024, 91% of office-based physicians and nearly all non-federal acute care hospitals (>99%) adopted a certified EHR. This marks substantial progress since the HITECH Act became law (2009) and the Health IT Certification Program officially certified its first Health IT Module (late 2010). This rapid digitization means that when patients receive inpatient and outpatient care, nearly all those encounters are documented electronically, enabling patient access to their health information through smartphone apps, electronic health information exchange via information networks, and, increasingly, the use of artificial intelligence to advance clinical care and patient engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
