State HIE Children’s Medical Center Dallas Enables True Data Liberation for Patients

Children’s Medical Center Dallas is among the first hospitals in the U.S. to implement true, untethered export of patient health data to a Personal Health Record (PHR) – one of the many benefits of health IT. Over a year in planning, and in partnership with Microsoft Health Vault and Verizon, and supported by ONC, Children’s is now exporting patient health data for patients undergoing treatment for Sickle Cell Disease to their PHRs, and they are expanding the program to other care specialties including cardiac care.

This week marks a major milestone in our journey towards adoption and meaningful use of electronic health records. As we work toward the secure, private and meaningful exchange of interoperable health information across the continuum of care, the law that made much of this possible turns five. We are celebrating the five-year anniversary of the passage of the Health Information Technology and Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) as part of the American Recovery and Revitalization Act.

Electronic Health & Medical Records 2014 Edition EHR Certification Includes New Transparency Requirements

ONC’s 2014 Edition EHR Certification Criteria define the requirements that EHR technology must meet in order to be used by eligible professionals (EPs), eligible hospitals (EHs), and critical access hospitals (CAHs) participating in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. In addition to these criteria, ONC made some policy changes to the HIT Certification Program.

Privacy and Security ONC launches new challenge to create online notice of privacy practices

Thanks to the HIPAA Privacy Rule patients have the right to be informed of their rights with respect to their protected health information as well as how their health care providers and health plans may use and disclose such information. Health plans and health care providers are required to develop and distribute a written notice that provides a clear, user-friendly explanation of these rights and practices. These are known as Notices of Privacy Practices (NPP) and may be on paper or online.
