In 2020, as the U.S. health care system faced the unprecedented challenge of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine emerged as an invaluable care delivery tool; both providers and patients heavily relied on it for providing and receiving care. Through an analysis of National Electronic Health Record Survey (NEHRS) 2021 data and from in-house data collected from electronic health record (EHR) developers’ app galleries, we have an opportunity to inform the public about physicians’ experiences with telemedicine during the pandemic.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed two important new rules in December 2022 which, if finalized, would advance electronic health information exchange and streamline cumbersome health care processes by establishing standardized requirements across the industry. These rules reflect the deep collaboration between CMS and ONC to ensure that providers and payers adopt common, open-industry standards to advance interoperability and industry innovation.

The public comment period for the 2023 Standards Version Advancement Process (SVAP) is now open. The SVAP allows Certified Health IT Developers to voluntarily update their Health IT Modules to newer versions of standards and provide these updates to their customers.
As of late January 2023, 38 Certified Health IT Developers and 50 Certified Health IT Modules had voluntarily updated to standards versions on the 2022 SVAP list, which are supported by test tools such as the Inferno (g)(10) Standardized API Test Kit.
Is Health IT Ready for Social Determinants of Health-Focused Clinical Decision Support?

In a brief titled The Feasibility of Social Determinants of Health Clinical Decision Support, ONC explores how clinical practice guidelines that include social determinants of health (SDOH) factors present an opportunity to advance health equity and improve health outcomes. A standardized approach to clinical decision support (CDS) using SDOH factors can enable clinical practice guidelines to become part of routine care delivery. Such an approach has the potential for broad implementation in a variety of settings and with various systems.
