The numbers are in and meaningful use of Meaningful Use appears to be working. In Ohio, nearly half of the providers in the Cincinnati Beacon Community program have achieved meaningful use. In Maine, 83% of the patient population is electronically sharing health care information with their providers, facilitated by the statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE), HealthInfoNet.

ONC’s Certification Program includes the certification of two types of electronic health record (EHR) technology: Complete EHR and EHR Module. To meet the EHR adoption requirement to qualify for meaningful use incentive payments, an eligible professional or hospital can use either a Complete EHR, or a set of EHR Modules that collectively meets the definition of Certified EHR Technology (CEHRT). Responsibility for assuring that a set of certified EHR Modules can be successfully and securely integrated together is left up to the adopter.

New Report Finds E-Prescribing Is on the Rise

One giant leap forward in the transformation of health care is the use of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) to reduce mistakes, control costs, and better coordinate care. E-prescribing has been found to improve patient care and safety by preventing medication errors that are associated with paper prescriptions. Recognizing the importance of e-prescribing in improving patient care, part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program provides incentive payments for certain eligible health care providers who e-prescribe as part of meeting the meaningful use requirements that rely on certified EHR technology.
