Dr. Doug Fridsma was the Chief Scientist in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Prior to arriving at ONC, Dr. Fridsma was on the teaching staff in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University and had a clinical practice at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. Dr. Fridsma completed his medical training at the University of Michigan in 1990, and his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University in 2003. In his role at ONC, Dr. Fridsma leads the divisions that is responsible for managing the Federal Health Architecture, the Standards & Interoperability Framework, and ONC's work in the international and innovation communities. These programs are all focused on providing a foundation for interoperable health information exchange. He served on the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) Board of Directors from 2005-2008, as well as the Health IT Standards Committee from 2009-2010. Dr. Fridsma currently serves as a board member of HL7.

HIMSS 2012 Interoperability Showcase Participants Get a Surprise Challenge

Last Thursday, National Coordinator for Health IT Farzad Mostashari made an impromptu visit to the ONC/FHA area of the HIMSS 2012 Interoperability Showcase. He gathered the participants and issued a surprise challenge: In the next hour, demonstrate interoperable health information exchange with another showcase participant whom you haven’t exchanged information with before.

A Colleague Moves On…

Last week, Arien Malec submitted his resignation as Coordinator of the Direct Project and the Standards & Interoperability (S&I) Framework to return to the private sector.  In the past year and a half, he has successfully built a solid foundation for nationwide interoperability and exchange through his creative and diligent leadership of the Direct Project and the S&I Framework.

Interoperable Health Information Exchange Featured at GHIT Conference

The Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) will be hosting its annual Government Health IT (GHIT) Conference June 14-15 in Washington, DC. ONC’s presence at the meeting will highlight the ongoing work being done at the federal and state level supporting interoperable health information exchange and meaningful use of electronic health records. In addition to a closing keynote speech by our new National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Dr. Farzad Mostashari, I’ll be speaking about our efforts promoting standards-based interoperable health information exchange.
