{"id":87,"date":"2009-12-07T13:31:01","date_gmt":"2009-12-07T20:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healthit.hhs.gov\/blog\/onc\/?p=87"},"modified":"2026-01-06T15:13:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:13:57","slug":"onc-local-grants-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/onc-local-grants-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"ONC Local Grants Announcement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At ONC, we\u2019re making tremendous progress to achieve our goals and today, I wanted to provide a quick update and an important new announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although I\u2019m often out front in communicating our goals and progress, there is an entire organization \u2013 plus numerous collaborating agencies, our federal advisory committees, and other stakeholders \u2013 behind me working harder, and faster than ever, to get the right pieces in place to meet very aggressive timelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have seen evidence of that work already with our announcements of major grant programs to help establish health information exchange and grow the health IT workforce.&nbsp; And you\u2019ll see even more in the weeks and months ahead as we roll out new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, we\u2019re on the way to getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/funding-announcements\/\">Regional Extension Centers<\/a> and the State Health Information Exchange program established early in 2010.\u00a0 In fact, on a technical assistance call on Friday about the extension center program, we announced that, due to a strong response for applications, there will be approximately 30 extension center awards made in January and the remainder in March.\u00a0 This should assure support is in place for providers looking to become meaningful users of EHR systems leading up to 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, this isn\u2019t all we\u2019re doing.\u00a0 You will see meaningful use criteria (from CMS) in a matter of weeks.\u00a0 We also anticipate publishing in early 2010 our proposed plans for establishing a new certification program, which we believe will enable most vendors to have their products certified by 2011.
