{"id":5302,"date":"2013-09-19T14:59:52","date_gmt":"2013-09-19T18:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=5302"},"modified":"2025-08-19T21:34:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T21:34:07","slug":"story-numbers-practices-adopting-implementing-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/story-numbers-practices-adopting-implementing-health\/","title":{"rendered":"The Story Behind the Numbers: Best Practices for Adopting and Implementing Health IT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There has been a dramatic increase in the adoption and use of electronic health records among <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/onc-data-brief-7-december-2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthcare providers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/oncdatabrief9final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hospitals<\/a> across the country.* \u00a0But the numbers don\u2019t tell the whole story.\u00a0 Behind the steep increase in electronic health record (EHR) adoption is the story of each provider and organization as they adopt and optimize health information technology (health IT).\u00a0 What are the experiences of providers and organizations as they implement and optimize health IT?\u00a0 Are there lessons and best practices to share with other organizations that might face similar obstacles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-report-details-best-practices-for-implementing-health-it\"><b>Report details best practices for implementing health IT<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hit_lessons_learned_lit_review_final_08-01-2013-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new ONC-funded report from the Urban Institute<\/a> explores these questions by summarizing the findings of 75 articles that identify best and promising practices for implementing and optimizing health IT and electronic health records.&nbsp; The report includes white papers as well as peer-reviewed articles and is unique since many literature reviews are limited to peer-reviewed journals, potentially omitting important information about the experiences of providers with adoption and meaningful use due to a publication bias favoring articles that use quantitative methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-health-it-covers-broad-scope-of-activities\"><b>Health IT covers broad scope of activities <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the planning, vendor selection, and implementation activities, there are three broad types of health IT activities that occur continuously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>workflow design and software customization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>training and user support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>optimization and modification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Successfully engaging in these health IT activities involves addressing different challenges from the technical, organizational, and personal perspectives.&nbsp; The main findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Staff at all levels should be engaged early and throughout the process of refining how technology is used throughout the organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quality improvement should drive system requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planning for changes in user workflow is one of the first and most important tasks<b> <\/b>for organizations implementing an EHR system:&nbsp; invest resources in workflow analysis so that workflows can be redesigned and the health IT customized for maximum benefit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ongoing workforce training and technical support are needed to maintain the system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leverage the skills of role models such as clinical leaders, champions, super-users, and training coordinators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-importance-of-health-it\"><b>The importance of health IT <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Institute of Medicine considers health IT to be foundational as we strive to build a \u201clearning health care system,\u201d which uses evidence to improve quality, safety, and efficiency.&nbsp;
