{"id":5267,"date":"2013-09-17T08:58:14","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T12:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=5267"},"modified":"2025-07-14T20:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T20:35:12","slug":"health-week-interoperability-showcase-highlights-progress-electronic-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/health-week-interoperability-showcase-highlights-progress-electronic-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Health IT Week Interoperability Showcase Highlights Progress in Electronic Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Tuesday, September 17 and Wednesday, September 18, several of our federal partners will be participating in the Health IT Week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interoperabilityshowcase.org\/nhit13\/\">Interoperability Showcase<\/a>&nbsp; on Capitol Hill. Federal Health Architecture (FHA) member &nbsp;agencies will highlight their work toward the development and use of interoperable electronic health information exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electronic-health-advances-on-display\"><b>Electronic health advances on display<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many agencies will feature their innovations in the health IT and electronic health information field. Some of the highlights include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Social Security Administration will feature its work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialsecurity.gov\/hit\/our-initiative.html\">MEGAHIT program<\/a> that utilizes electronic health information to speed disability determinations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/VLER\/\">Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER)<\/a> program office will highlight the Veterans Administration\u2019s work developing a standardized electronic health record for our service members and veterans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services will showcase their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems\/Computer-Data-and-Systems\/ESMD\/index.html\">Electronic Submission of Medical Data (esMD)<\/a> program, a tool that improves the process for resolving improper Medicare and Medicaid payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learn-more-about-electronic-health-at-the-interoperability-showcase\"><b>Learn more about electronic health at the Interoperability Showcase<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Interoperability Showcase is taking place on Capitol Hill to provide easy access and visibility to important electronic health programs for lawmakers.&nbsp; I\u2019m proud that we\u2019ll be able to highlight the work of our federal partners as well as private organizations that are working to create what I like to call an interoperable health IT \u201cecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-onc-s-continued-focus-on-interoperability\"><b>ONC\u2019s Continued Focus on Interoperability<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m delighted that our federal partners are able to participate in this event and share the important work they&#8217;re doing. &nbsp;I only wish the space were large enough to accommodate demonstrations of all the initiatives that are being coordinated by ONC to support interoperability. &nbsp;Meaningful Use Stage 2 is providing an excellent foundation for the continued adoption of health IT and increasing use of electronic health information exchange. Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siframework.org\/\">Standards &amp; Interoperability Framework<\/a> &nbsp;has been in operation for over 2 years, and the standards development work we&#8217;ve accomplished is significant. &nbsp;I urge readers to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.siframework.org\/\">S&amp;I Framework wiki<\/a> &nbsp;to learn more about the numerous initiatives currently operating that support interoperability standards development and harmonization.
