{"id":5126,"date":"2013-08-08T12:29:33","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T16:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=5126"},"modified":"2025-09-12T03:50:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T03:50:02","slug":"crowds-care-cancer-app-challenge-winner-facilitates-selfmanagement-cancer-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/crowds-care-cancer-app-challenge-winner-facilitates-selfmanagement-cancer-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowds Care for Cancer App Challenge Winner Facilitates Self-Management of Cancer Care"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drum roll please!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/\">The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology<\/a> and the National Cancer Institute congratulates Dr. Michelle Longmire and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medable.com\/\"> Medable.com<\/a>&nbsp;team for winning the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health2con.com\/devchallenge\/crowds-care-for-cancer-challenge-supporting-survivors-2\/\">Crowds Care for Cancer Challenge<\/a> with their submission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medstartr.com\/projects\/192-together\"><em>Together<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/buzz-blog\/health-innovation\/developer-contest-create-cancer-survivor-tool\/\">asked app developers<\/a> to create new tools to help survivors manage their cancer care after they have completed treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Crowds Care for Cancer Challenge builds on the efforts ONC has undertaken to providing tools and information \u2013 like those that could be integrated into Blue Button based tools \u2013 to both patients and providers to help better manage health and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having more health information benefits patients and their doctors alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-together-helps-survivors-coordinate-cancer-care\"><strong><em>Together<\/em> helps survivors coordinate cancer care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Together<\/em>, an iPhone-accessible mobile phone app, offers another tool that helps patients and their providers share information through a design with \u201chand-offs\u201d or \u201ctransitions in care\u201d at the core. The new app will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow cancer providers to chat securely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordinate cancer care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"396\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/Togethers-Care-Conversation-feature_282483.png?w=396\" alt=\"Screenshot of Togethers Care Conversation Feature\" class=\"wp-image-177785\" style=\"width:150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/Togethers-Care-Conversation-feature_282483.png 396w, https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/Togethers-Care-Conversation-feature_282483.png?resize=169,300 169w, https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/Togethers-Care-Conversation-feature_282483.png?resize=84,150 84w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prominent feature of the app, \u201cCare Conversation\u201d offers patients a secure platform for collaborative cancer care where patients can invite multiple providers to chat about their care, get questions answered and hopefully engage in a patient-centered dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medable.com\/\">Medable.com<\/a>&nbsp;engaged cancer survivors to help co-design the fundamental features of their tool, and focused on improving communication between patients and their care team. <em>Together<\/em> promises to be a tool that can unite all members of the healthcare team to help cancer survivors transition between specialists and primary care providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another stand-out feature that <em>Together<\/em> will offer when the first version is available in the iTunes App Store in August, is the ability to integrate commercial wearable sensor data &#8211; like that from home blood pressure monitors or wearable devices like Fitbit \u2013 with relative data handling ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together claims to be the first application that enables a patient to share commercial wearable sensor data directly with their healthcare provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cancer-care-at-the-forefront-of-onc-challenge\"><strong>Cancer care at the forefront of ONC Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together was chosen as one of three initial finalists from a pool of 30 applicants that submitted cancer care tools to the first phase of the <a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.gov\/ONC\/529-crowds-care-for-cancer-supporting-survivors\">Crowds Care for Cancer Challenge (CC4C13)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second phase of the challenge, <em>Together<\/em>\u2014along with the other two finalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medstartr.com\/projects\/191-patientswithpower\">Patients with Power<\/a> &nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/journeyforward.org\/\">Journey Forward<\/a> \u2014launched a 30-day crowdfunding campaign with the help of the crowdfunding platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medstartr.com\/crowdscare\">MedStartr<\/a> . Soliciting support from \u2018the crowd,\u2019 the three teams garnered additional seed funding as well as pertinent feedback for further iterations of their tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 12th the three finalists turned in their final submissions for judging. The review panel was comprised of various cancer care stakeholders \u2013 patient advocates, academics, clinicians, and health information technology specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All submissions were judged on the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>usability and design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>evidence of co-design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integration with Blue Button+ standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customizability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ability to address the needs of cancer survivors (<a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.gov\/ONC\/529-crowds-care-for-cancer-supporting-survivors\">click here<\/a> to view full details of the Challenge)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/research\/researchprogramsfunding\/barbara-d-powe-phd-rn\"> Barbara Powe<\/a>, Director of Underserved Population Research at the American Cancer Society and a member of the review panel remarked that <em>Together<\/em> \u201cwas a very impressive entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The things that stood out were how patient-centered it was, across the realms of design, simplicity, features, and functions.
