{"id":4781,"date":"2013-05-24T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T16:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=4781"},"modified":"2026-01-06T16:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T16:27:13","slug":"directtrust-builds-transparency-confidence-direct-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/health-information-exchange-2\/directtrust-builds-transparency-confidence-direct-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"DirectTrust Builds Transparency and Confidence in Direct Exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ONC recently released the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/direct_implementation_guidelines_to_assure_security_and_interoperability.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Direct Implementation Guidelines for Assuring Security and Interoperability<\/a>\u00a0that recommend a common set of policies and practices to implementers to ensure Direct is being executed in a way that will support vendor-to-vendor exchange and interoperability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-directtrust-provides-governance-over-direct-exchange\"><b>DirectTrust provides governance over Direct exchange<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to issuing those guidelines, we awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/policy-researchers-implementers\/exemplar-hie-governance-entities-program\">Exemplar Governance cooperative agreement<\/a> to DirectTrust, a governance organization that creates policy and business processes\/practices for Direct exchange.\u00a0 Through the cooperative agreement, DirectTrust will continue and expand its work to establish and promote the adoption of security and trust \u201crules of the road,\u201d including the guidelines issued by ONC for Direct exchange, operationalized via accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accreditation-ensures-direct-exchange-participants-meet-policy-security-and-business-requirements\"><b>Accreditation ensures Direct exchange participants meet policy, security, and business requirements<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DirectTrust works with the Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) to provide a transparent accreditation process that gives Direct service providers and their subscribers a way of knowing that exchange participants meet or exceed a set of minimum policy, security, and business practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By providing this information, it saves participants the time and energy needed to assess each Direct implementation.&nbsp; Creating a recognizable \u2018seal of approval\u2019 also reduces the need for Direct implementers to engage in one-to-one contractual arrangements before allowing information to flow between each other\u2019s systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-accreditation-establishes-trust-in-direct-exchange\"><b>Accreditation establishes trust in Direct exchange<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DirectTrust\u2019s accreditation process also gives Direct implementers a simple way of establishing scalable technical trust via electronic trust bundle exchange.&nbsp;
