{"id":4312,"date":"2013-03-01T13:26:25","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T18:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=4312"},"modified":"2026-01-06T15:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:10:14","slug":"national-health-information-exchange-governance-forum-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/national-health-information-exchange-governance-forum-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"National Health Information Exchange Governance Forum Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last year, ONC issued a Request for Information looking for comments about a potential governance mechanism for the nationwide health information network.&nbsp; Based on comments we received, along with feedback from multiple stakeholders, we decided not to continue with a formal rulemaking process, but instead pursue a non-regulatory approach to health information exchange (HIE) governance.&nbsp; We committed to launching a range of activities to support and learn from existing governance initiatives and advance our HIE goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>increase interoperability,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decrease the cost and complexity of exchange, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase trust among participants to mobilize trusted exchange to support patient care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hie-governance-town-hall\"><strong>HIE Governance Town Hall<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We described these activities in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalehealth.org\/HIEGovernanceTownHall\">Town Hall<\/a> on February 14.&nbsp; They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>issuing up to four grants to develop specific solutions to barriers to to health information exchange;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>publishing a high level framework of good governance principles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>convening leading governance entities to identify and shine a light on good governance practices and models; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monitoring the HIE ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are pleased that one of those activities, which aims to identify and shine a light on good governance practices and models, is being launched this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-national-hie-governance-forum-nbsp\"><strong>National HIE Governance Forum&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National e-health Collaborative, an ONC grantee, has announced the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalehealth.org\/hie-governance-forum\">National HIE Governance Forum<\/a>. This forum will bring together entities that are currently serving in governance roles for specific groups of health information exchange partners at the national, state, or regional level.&nbsp; Throughout the coming year, they will identify key issues and common challenges in the governance of health information exchange along with best practices to address them.&nbsp; Their lessons learned will be widely shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-goal-for-hie\"><strong>Our Goal for HIE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The overarching goal for ONC remains that information follows the patient where and when it is needed, across organizational, vendor, and geographic boundaries.
