{"id":4048,"date":"2013-01-04T17:22:14","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T22:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=4048"},"modified":"2026-01-06T05:32:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T05:32:48","slug":"oncs-annual-meeting-sees-health-foundation-payment-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/oncs-annual-meeting-sees-health-foundation-payment-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"ONC\u2019s Annual Meeting Sees Health IT as Foundation for New Payment Policies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 1,200 grantees, stakeholders, and other members of the public came together December 12 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/2012oncmeeting\/\">2012 ONC Annual Meeting<\/a> to discuss the successes, challenges and impacts of the wide-spread health information technology (health IT) adoption to improve care.&nbsp; This year\u2019s theme, \u201cThe Meaningful Foundation for the Future of Healthcare,\u201d evoked how meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs) is enabling providers to thrive under new payment and delivery systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvworldwide.com\/events\/hhs\/121212\/default.cfm?id=15242&amp;type=flv&amp;test=0&amp;live=0\">Farzad Mostashari<\/a> lauded the many personal success stories of those who have improved health care through health IT.&nbsp; He inspired those gathered to \u201cbelieve that information is power, and that technology holds the promise that tomorrow will be better than today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wide range of speakers discussed progress in the exchange of health information, the growing use and need for new security for mobile devices, and the importance of all stakeholders &#8212; especially consumers &#8212; in helping HHS develop meaningful use requirements in stages to serve as building blocks for the future. Participants heard from Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) about the importance of ensuring that all providers and patients have access to EHRs and that EHRs are interoperable to ensure that patients and clinicians have health information when they need it most \u2013 at the point of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To cap the day, a distinguished panel of experts, including George Halvorson, CEO, Kaiser Permanente; David Wennberg, MD, CEO, Northern New England Accountable Care Collaborative; and Karen DeSalvo, MD, Health Commissioner, City of New Orleans, discussed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvworldwide.com\/events\/hhs\/121212\/default.cfm?id=15249&amp;type=flv&amp;test=0&amp;live=0\">Health IT as the Foundation for the 3-part Aim<\/a> \u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the key themes discussed was the idea that health IT is a critical enabler to providers\u2019 success in this era of accountable care.
