{"id":3581,"date":"2012-09-19T14:56:52","date_gmt":"2012-09-19T18:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=3581"},"modified":"2025-07-07T13:52:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T13:52:53","slug":"engaging-patients-vdt-twitter-pledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/engaging-patients-vdt-twitter-pledge\/","title":{"rendered":"Engaging Patients Early: The \u201cVDT Now\u201d Twitter Pledge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last week, ONC kicked off National Health IT Week with the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\">Consumer<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\"> He<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\">alt<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\">h<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\">IT Summ<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/healthitweek\/\">it<\/a>, a celebration of progress in consumer engagement through health IT, and an opportunity to catalyze yet more action among stakeholders such as patients, providers, payers, IT developers, consumer advocacy organizations, and electronic health record (EHR) vendors in the near future.&nbsp; A few highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/bluebutton\">Blue Button<\/a>\u201d is evolving from a specific standard (downloading a text file) to a broader concept meaning \u201cdownload and share my health data\u201d for Americans nationwide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ONC\u2019s Pledge Program has grown from 30 to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/faqs\/blue-button\/\">400 organizations<\/a> in less than a year (and has been renamed \u201cthe Blue Button Pledge Program\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements released last month included the stipulation that patients be given the capability to view, download, and transmit their health data electronically from their provider\u2019s EHR. And the terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/faqs\/blue-button\/\">Blue Button Pledge<\/a> are evolving to keep all these concepts in sync.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A key theme that came through the Consumer Health IT Summit was that consumer engagement via health IT is a movement\u2014government is acting as a convener and catalyst, but it\u2019s the community of stakeholders that is making it happen. In short, it\u2019s <em>you<\/em>\u2014and everyone else who cares enough to get involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vdtnow-twitter-pledge\">#VDTnow Twitter Pledge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of catalyzing action,and consistent with our <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/\/pledge\">Blue Button Pledge<\/a>, a few days before the Summit we sent out a Tweet using hashtag #VDTnow challenging EHR vendors to commit to meet the Meaningful Use \u201cview, download, and transmit\u201d capabilities for patients early\u2014by the HIMSS Annual Conference, which is scheduled for March 3 &#8211; 7, 2013. &nbsp;Then we gave a shout out on stage to the vendors who confirmed their willingness to participate.
