{"id":2049,"date":"2011-09-07T09:18:16","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T13:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2026-01-06T15:10:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:10:39","slug":"apps-abuse-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/insights-updates\/apps-abuse-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"ONC Partners with the Vice President\u2019s Office for Apps Against Abuse Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As a former vice president at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainn.org\/\">RAINN<\/a> (the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network), I was thrilled to learn of the <a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.gov\/HHS\/199-apps-against-abuse\">Apps Against Abuse challenge<\/a> being launched by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in coordination with Vice President Biden\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At RAINN, I led development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndvh.org\/\">National Sexual Assault Online Hotline<\/a>, the nation\u2019s first online hotline providing secure, confidential, and real-time support for survivors of sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There I saw firsthand the ability of technology, when carefully and properly applied, to <strong>transform<\/strong> a service and provide much needed support to many more people than traditional service methods could reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In RAINN\u2019s case, technology enabled thousands more people to access critical support and provided a new way for those unable to talk about their experience by phone to still get the help they needed and take steps toward recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-apps-against-abuse-challenge\">Apps Against Abuse Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.gov\/HHS\/199-apps-against-abuse\">Apps Against Abuse challenge<\/a> is aimed at young people age 18 to 25 &#8211; a demographic that has integrated technology into almost every aspect of their lives.&nbsp; <strong>Unfortunately<\/strong>, this age group is also uniquely vulnerable to sexual assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applying the technology this generation has embraced to one of the most serious threats they face has tremendous potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/challenge.gov\/HHS\/199-apps-against-abuse\">Apps Against Abuse<\/a> challenge wants people age 18 to 25 to help be part of the solution \u2013 young people are being <strong>encouraged<\/strong> to work with their peers and with developers to create these apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, imagine an app that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has tips for recognizing situations that may escalate toward violence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows friends and peers to form personal support networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connects someone with the person closest to them in situations that are getting out of control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We need your help in finding the next great innovation to prevent domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more people involved in developing creative apps to prevent sexual assault, the more effective the apps will be, so please help get the word out about this exciting challenge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are not currently any apps in any app store addressing this challenge.
