The data sources&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to inform clinical and biomedical research are more diverse than ever, drawing from electronic health records<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(EHRs)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, genomic tests, recordings from wearable devices, and patient surveys, to name a few. The insights that can be drawn from these require&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effective&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data collection,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aggregation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sharing&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in addition to health IT infrastructure capable of supporting research goals.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To address some of these requirement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ONC has been focused on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;accelerating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;an ecosystem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that uses&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standardized,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">application programming interface<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(API<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">&nbsp;<\/span><wp-block data-block=\"core\/more\"><\/wp-block><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-researcher-perspectives-on-api-and-app-connectivity-nbsp\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Researcher Perspectives on API and App Connectivity<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Accelerating-APIs-For-Scientific-Discovery-Researcher-Perspectives.pdf\">The\u00a0<\/a><\/span><i><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Accelerating-APIs-For-Scientific-Discovery-Researcher-Perspectives.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researcher Perspectives on APIs<\/span><\/a><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Accelerating-APIs-For-Scientific-Discovery-Researcher-Perspectives.pdf\"> report [PDF &#8211; 486 KB]<\/a> is the second of four\u00a0&#8220;Accelerating APIs\u201d\u00a0reports that explore the current landscape of API-based health information exchange in a rapidly evolving electronic health data ecosystem. Understanding researchers&#8217; perspectives\u00a0is\u00a0crucial for greater adoption and scientific advancement through the use of standardized APIs,\u00a0specifically\u00a0Health Level Seven International (HL7\u00ae) Fast Healthcare in Interoperability Resources (FHIR\u00ae)-based APIs,\u00a0for research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To better understand the current state of the API ecosystem and researchers\u2019 ability to leverage standardized AP<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Is,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;ONC conducted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;discussions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;with nine organizations&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">involved in clinical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, informatics, biomedical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and pharmacological research in varying roles.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Discussions focused on the use of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;standardized and non-standardized APIs and apps; successes, challenges,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">barriers; and opportunities for greater use of API and apps for research purposes. The report highlights various examples of where APIs and apps are beginning to emerge to meet the needs of the research community. For example<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the Research Electronic Data Capture data exchange platform<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which is used by nearly 5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">000 institutions to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">manage<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;resea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rch&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, is now supporting the use of FHIR to facilitate the collection of data from electronic health records<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is part of the effort&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to leverage standardized APIs such as the FHIR Bulk Data Access API for clinical and biomedical informatics research, especially to conduct large scale studies, with data sets from multiple sites and data outside the EHR.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:360,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provisions&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/information-blocking\/\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cures Act Final Rule<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;are implemented and researchers become more familiar with the use of standardized APIs,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use in research is expected to expand. However, participants underscored that scientific discovery is fueled by a rich and varied landscape of data sources not yet captured by standardized APIs.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o make data more usable for research purposes, there needs to be more standardization and better tools for mapping, configuring, and extracting the data across different systems and organizations.
