Among many other health IT topics, attendees discussed patients\u2019 access to health information and privacy considerations, health care cost transparency, and the latest updates to health IT standards. If you were not able to join us in DC, you can view the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\">webcast<\/a>. Slide presentations from the breakout sessions will be made available online in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what did people have to say? Here are some key takeaways from ONC\u2019s 2020 Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ten-years-later-we-ve-come-a-long-way-but-there-s-still-work-to-do\"><strong>Ten years later, we\u2019ve come a long way, but there\u2019s still work to do.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ONC\u2019s first Annual Meeting in 2011 gathered Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act HITECH grantees to talk about strategies to advance EHR adoption rates. Since that time when the smartphone was a brand new technology, EHR adoption has more than doubled in both <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.healthit.gov\/quickstats\/pages\/physician-ehr-adoption-trends.php\">physicians\u2019 offices<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.healthit.gov\/quickstats\/pages\/FIG-Hospital-EHR-Adoption.php\">hospitals<\/a>. Today, EHRs are almost ubiquitous, but the ability for patients to access their data and shop for their care in an informed way is not. Panelists, speakers, and attendees alike at the Annual Meeting all wanted to know: <em>how do we free the data?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-patients-want-access-to-their-records-and-they-deserve-it\"><strong>Patients want access to their records, and they deserve it.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main topic of conversation at the meeting was, \u201c<em>how do we increase patients\u2019 access to their data?\u201d <\/em>On the main stage, in breakout sessions, and on social media, many shared both success stories and their frustrations. Many pointed out that increasing access was not only good for the patient, but good for business as well. But ensuring patient privacy was a key thread throughout these conversations. Deven McGraw pointed out <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\/VideoId\/3959\/onc-2020-balancing-patient-privacy-with-data-access-lessons-from-the-field\">on stage<\/a>, \u201cthe ability of individuals to access data about them is a hallmark of privacy,\u201d although industry and policymakers alike still must ensure that data is secure. On the same panel, Cynthia Fisher described transparent data sharing as critical to restoring trust and accountability in the marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-technology-exists-but-the-policies-need-to-catch-up\"><strong>The technology exists, but the policies need to catch up.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We heard about <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\/VideoId\/3960\/onc-2020-merging-clinical-and-financial-standards-the-shift-to-value-and-transparency\">standards<\/a> for clinical data and financial transactions, technology for <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\/VideoId\/3955\/onc-2020-unique-perspectives-on-unique-patient-ids\">matching<\/a> you with your (snail) mail, and how leading <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\/VideoId\/3951\/onc-2020-innovations-in-health-it\">innovators<\/a> are using application programming interfaces and the HL7\u00ae FHIR\u00ae standard to advance access. And yet, these technologies are not always working in sync. Several new and proposed policies from HHS \u2013 including ONC\u2019s and CMS\u2019s proposed interoperability rules and the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement \u2013 are set to move the nation one step closer to making these technologies work for the patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-everyone-is-paying-attention-to-health-it\"><strong>Everyone is paying attention to health IT.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual Meeting attendees ranged from health IT developers to software executives; doctors and nurses to healthcare administrators; and local, state, and federal public health officials. We heard remarks from <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tvworldwide.com\/Events\/ONC-Annual-Meeting-2020\/VideoId\/3954\/onc-2020-congressional-perspective-on-unique-patient-ids\">Congressman Bill Foster<\/a> (D-IL) about his role in drafting legislation asking HHS to examine unique patient identifiers. Staff from the Senate HELP and the House Energy and Commerce Committees told us about Congress\u2019 ongoing interest in health IT advancements via the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Cures Act.
