We may still be a few years away from flying cars, but we\u2019ve made a lot of progress since 2010. The Interoperability Standards Advisory (ISA), too, has changed a lot since the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/sites\/default\/files\/2015interoperabilitystandardsadvisory01232015final_for_public_comment.pdf\">first publication in 2015<\/a> \u2013 from a static, 13 page document, to an <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/\">interactive website<\/a> covering close to 200 \u201cinteroperability needs\u201d spanning clinical care, public health, administrative transactions, research, consumer access, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving public comments during this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/interoperability\/interoperability-standards-advisory-2019-request-for-comments\">review and comment period<\/a>, staff from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) analyzed comments and made updates all across the ISA. To commemorate the sixth annual ISA publication, here are six of the biggest changes you\u2019ll see in ISA this year. You can also see more <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/recent-isa-updates\">high-level updates<\/a> or follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/isa-rss-feed\">ISA RSS Feed<\/a> to track any changes made throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-a-redesigned-isa-homepage\">1: A Redesigned ISA Homepage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been following the ISA for some time, you likely remember the home page had tons of informative text. We\u2019ve redesigned the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\">ISA homepage<\/a> to make things easier to find when you arrive \u2013 while moving the informative text onto other pages that are broken down by topics. We\u2019ll be making more improvements to the site\u2019s navigation and adding more informational resources over the next few months as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-additional-social-behavioral-and-psychological-interoperability-needs\">2: Additional Social, Behavioral, and Psychological Interoperability Needs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As ONC continues work to support <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/buzz-blog\/interoperability\/advancing-interoperable-social-determinants-of-health-data\">interoperability for Social Determinants of Health<\/a>, the ISA has added four new interoperability needs <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/social-psychological-and-behavioral-data\">in this area<\/a>, including Representing Drug Use, Representing Food Insecurity, Representing Housing Insecurity, and Representing Transportation Insecurity. As factors like these can greatly impact one\u2019s overall health, ensuring this information is known, and captured in clinical systems and available to providers is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-care-coordination-for-referrals\">3: Care Coordination for Referrals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals represent an important aspect of one\u2019s care, but often information is not available to providers about the patient\u2019s medical needs or follow-up care. This new sub-section, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/care-coordination-referrals\">Care Coordination for Referrals<\/a> includes information about a number of initiatives that are working to solve referral pain points, including the 360X Project, an ONC-led initiative, and work Health Level 7 (HL7\u00ae) \u00a0is doing with the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR\u00ae) standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-clinical-notes\">4: Clinical Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/clinical-notes\">Clinical notes<\/a> represent an important component for documentation and communication of a patient\u2019s health, and were included as part of the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/us-core-data-interoperability-uscdi\">US Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI)<\/a>. We\u2019ve included a new sub-section to ensure implementers have helpful information about incorporating clinical notes into health IT systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-patient-reported-outcomes\">5: Patient Reported Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With patients becoming more active participants in their care, enabled through advances in technology, we\u2019ve expanded the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/consumer-accessexchange-health-information\">Consumer Access\/Exchange of Health Information<\/a> area to include the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/collection-and-exchange-patient-reported-outcomes\">Collection and Exchange of Patient Reported Outcomes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-cognitive-status\">6: Cognitive Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/functional-statusdisability\">Functional Status\/Disability<\/a> has been included in the ISA for some time. An equally important aspect of one\u2019s health is their <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/isa\/cognitive-status-0\">Cognitive Status<\/a> \u2013 now included in the ISA as a new sub-section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to all for your comments this year.\u00a0 Many updates were made across all portions of the ISA and these are just a handful of highlights. The <a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/isa\/sites\/isa\/files\/inline-files\/2020-ISA-Reference-Edition.pdf\">2020 Reference Edition<\/a> \u2013 a \u201csnapshot in time\u201d PDF view of the current ISA \u2013 is available for those that are seeking a static version of the ISA that remains unchanged throughout the year.\u00a0 The ISA should be considered as an open and transparent resource for industry and reflects the latest thinking around standards use with an eye toward nationwide interoperability. We\u2019ll be working this year to make a number of additional enhancements, both in terms of the site\u2019s content and overall functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We truly appreciate the time you took to review the ISA and provide comments.
